Citus Data, a US-based big data technology developer backed by internet company Digital Garage, raised $9.5m on Wednesday in a series A round led by venture capital firm Khosla Ventures.
Khosla was joined in the round by existing investors including Data Collective and Vaizra Investments. Ari Zilka, a partner at Khosla Ventures, will join the company’s board of directors in conjunction with the funding.
Citus has created a database capable of powering real-time analytic and operational workloads on big data. It is built on PostgreSQL, which the company claims is the world’s most advanced open source database.
The round followed $1.6m of seed funding supplied by backers including Japan-based Digital Garage, Trinity Ventures, Matt Ocko, Ben Ling and Paul Buchheit in 2012. Streamlined Ventures is also among the company’s investors.
Citus will use the series A capital to expand its development team and sales and marketing activity.
