ElectNext, a US-based political information company, has closed a $1.3m seed round.
Brooklyn Bridge Ventures led the funding, with Comcast Ventures, the corporate venturing unit of the US-based media company the bears its name, Liberty City Ventures, Digital News Ventures, Gabriel Investments, journalism charity the Knight Foundation and Investor’s Circle also taking part.
ElectNext has developed a product that allows website operators to embed information about federal and state politicians into stories that mention them. The information includes biographical, campaign finance and legislative data.
The PBS News Hour, Philly.com, PolicyMic and PoliticsPa already use the product and the start-up is in talks with operators of other news websites in Pennsylvania. ElectNext is also talking to organisations that it partnered with in the 2012 presidential elections, such as Comcast Corp and its NBC unit, The Washington Post Co and The Huffington Post.
ElectNext said it will use the money to boost the size of its six-person staff, improve its existing data sources and add new ones, as well as roll out its products to more customers.
