High Fidelity searches out $2.4m

Early stage venture capital firm True Ventures has led the $2.4m series A round for High Fidelity, a US-based online community startup created by the founder of the Second Life “Virtual World” [pictured]. Google Ventures, the corporate venturing unit of the US-based search engine, also reportedly participated in the round alongside a number of angel investors.

High Fidelity was founded this year by Philip Rosedale, the chief executive of Linden Lab, which created one of the first high profile online virtual worlds, Second Life, in 2003. Second Life, where users inhabited “avatars” and were able to construct and share their own landscapes, is seen as a precursor of many of today’s collaborative and massive multiplayer online gaming platforms.

On his blog, True Ventures’ Tony Conrad called Rosedale: “One of the most creative and visionary entrepreneurs of our generation.”
