Innogy backs Stirling.DK

Stirling.DK, a Denmark-based renewable energy provider using biomass as fuel, has raised €4m ($5.5m) and hired Phillip Charles Piddington as chairman and Torben Ellegarard as chief executive.

The latest investment round came from a syndicate including local pension fund Vaekstfonden, EnergiMidt and Innogy Venture Capital, a venture capital firm backed by Germany-based power utility RWE.

Piddington was former director of biomass at RWE Innogy, while Ellegaard had been head of engineering at Dong energy.

The interim incumbents, Bjarne Henning Jensen and Lotte Glarkrog, will remain on Stirling’s board, the latter as chief financial officer.

Stirling’s first round was in 2006 and RWE Innogy, as the corporate venturing unit was known until it took on outside investors this year, acquired a minority stake in July 2009 just before it bought a stake in France-based Ceram Hyd.
