Intel eyes promise in OrCam’s vision

Intel Capital has agreed to invest $15m in OrCam Technologies, an Israel-based developer of glasses that can help enable blind people interpret the world, according to GigaOM, which cited a report in Israeli daily Haaretz.

OrCam is the developer of a smart camera that, mounted on the end of eyeglasses, can which ‘see’ text, recognise objects and ‘whispers’ in your ear, enabling unsighted people to read newspapers, verify money note denominations or identify a product or item at which they are pointing.

Intel Capital is becoming increasingly active in the healthcare sector as part of a push from its parent company into health and life sciences, most recently acquiring BASIS Science, the developer of a wearable health tracker for $100m.
