InTouch buzzes into Ookbee

InTouch, formerly known as Shin Corp, has made its first deal since launching a Bt200m ($6.7m) corporate venturing fund, InVent, at the end of May.

As part of a recent filing to the Stock Exchange of Thailand, InTouch bought 33,400 shares in Ookbee, a Thailand-based provider of electronic book creation tools. InTouch paid Bt57.48m for the 25% stake in Ookbee.

InVent is expected to invest in three more start-ups this year.

Ookbee has about Bt10m in annual revenue from providing about 200 e-books and e-magazines.

Most investments in Thai start-ups have reportedly come from corporate venturing units, includomg Global Care Solutions (invested by Microsoft) in 1997, Sanook.com (invested by MIH, South Africa) in 1999, PaySbuy (invested by DTAC) in 2008 and Tarad.com (invested by Rakuten, Japan) in 2009.

Last year, Taiwan-based technology manufacturer Foxconn, through its subsidiary Power-all Networks, has invested in a joint venture with Thailand-based Venture Catalyst to create breakthrough technologies for its next-generation products and platforms.
