SwipeSense, a US-based hand hygiene monitoring technology developer backed by health insurance provider Blue Cross Blue Shield, has secured $10.6m in series B2 funding.
Venture capital firm Eclipse Ventures led the round, which included Sandbox Industries, the VC firm that partners Blue Cross Blue Shield’s corporate venturing unit, BlueCross BlueShield Venture Partners, as well as undisclosed other investors.
Founded in 2012, SwipeSense has developed a hand sanitising device for use by medical professionals in hospitals. The device clips on to scrubs and dispenses hand sanitiser at the push of a button, removing the need to walk to wall-mounted dispensers.
The device also tracks usage and feeds the data into a web application so managers can monitor hand sanitation rates.
SwipeSense claims the device increases hand hygiene rates by 64% in hospitals where it is used. The funding will be used to expand the team and scale product development for new applications.
The company has raised a total of $23.3m in venture capital, it said. It received $9.7m from undisclosed investors in mid-2015, according to a regulatory filing, and was a graduate of incubator Healthbox, which provided $50,000 in seed capital in 2012.
