Iunika, a Spain-based developer of solar-powered computers, is about to raise $46m for its series A round from an undisclosed group of investors and expand into the US.
Ulises Vegas, chief financial officer of Iunika, by email said: "This raising is a combination of equity raising and a soft loans/grants form the government, which also is subject to the fulfilment of a number of milestones.
"We are still accepting dealings/discussions with additional interested parties in entering in Iunika in the equity tranche as well as in the financing one."
The company said its tablets, e-books, netbooks and notebooks would be sold to the US education sector first before moving into the general consumer market in North America.
Ángel Blázquez, chief executive of Iunika, said: "We see the education market as still quite poorly addressed in North America, and the specialized hardware and software technologies for education that we developed for our European and Latin American customer base.
"Expanding into the general consumer electronics market will be a natural progression for us, as our Linux-based free software stack and environmentally friendly technologies – including biodegradable plastic casings and solar powered mobile computers – will prove compelling to a buying public that demands high levels of performance in an eco-conscious, cost-sensitive platform."
