Kahoot kicks up series A to $20m

Norway-based educational game developer Kahoot doubled a series A round featuring software provider Microsoft’s corporate venturing unit Microsoft Ventures to $20m yesterday.

The $10m extension was led by undisclosed, Norway-based private investors, and included Microsoft Ventures, Northzone and Creandum, the three participants in the $10m first tranche of the round in September 2016. Kahoot has now raised $26.5m in total.

Founded in 2013, Kahoot is the creator of a game-based platform that helps children learn socially. It has 50 million monthly active users and claims to have about 20 million learning games in its library.

The capital will be used for product development activities that will include Kahoot’s mobile app, which is available in beta on the Android and iOS platforms, and to increase the company’s commercial activities. It recently entered entertainment provider Walt Disney’s accelerator.

Kahoot CEO Erik Harrell said: “We are excited about increasing our investment in our commercial activities and in product development, including in mobile, with mobile being the ubiquitous platform that will enable learning anytime, anywhere among learners of all ages and in all contexts.”
