Kin Community takes in corporates for series D funding

Kin Community, the US-based operator of a female-focused digital media platform and community, has received $13.5m in a series D round led by Emil Capital Partners, a subsidiary of retail group Tengelmann.

Media companies Corus Entertainment, Allure Media and Tegna Media also took part in the round, as strategic investors.

Founded in 2007, Kin Community oversees a digital media offering that produces video content aimed at young women covering categories such as food, home and DIY. It has signed up more than 120 lifestyle content creators and has more than 170 million followers on social media.

Tegna has formed a strategic partnership with Kin Community that will involve content sharing across Tegna’s digital and linear television channels, including sponsored content and cross-promotion.

Kin Community established its Kin Canada subsidiary in 2014 in partnership with Canada-based Corus, and will launch Kin ANZ in Australia and New Zealand in autumn this year with the help of Australia-headquartered Allure.

Michael Wayne, co-founder and chief executive of Kin Community, said: “There are over 800 million young women around the world on a journey to define home for themselves.

“With our new partners and funding, we will further our mission to inspire and inform this generation through our extraordinary content and creator community.”

Corus led Kin Community’s $12m series C round in 2014, investing together with Emil Capital, Rustic Canyon Partners, Mayfield Fund and General Catalyst Partners in a round that increased the company’s overall funding to $27m.
