Kenya-based telecoms company Wananchi Group has raised $57.5m from a consortium including US-based cable company Liberty Global.
Fund managers Oppenheimer Funds and Sarona Asset Management, newswire Reuters said, after prior investment by venture capital firm East Africa Capital Partners. The infusion of capital is aimed at helping the company expand its fibre optics infrastructure and launch a satellite pay-television service across eastern Africa.
Wananchi Group is the only triple-play operator in East Africa and will roll out its new services in nine countries in the eastern African region: Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Malawi, Ethiopia, Sudan and Zambia.
