MariaDB organises funding from EIB

MariaDB, a Finland-based open-source database technology developer backed by semiconductor producer Intel, received €25m ($27.2m) from multilateral financial services firm European Investment Bank (EIB) on Monday.

MariaDB has developed open-source database software that can be used in a hybrid, public or private cloud, and which is compatible with a range of existing software platforms including Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, Docker and OpenStack.

The funding will go to product innovation as MariaDB also looks to grow its sales and marketing teams to penetrate further into the European, American and Asian markets, as well as the engineering team located at its head office.

Michael Howard, MariaDB’s chief executive, said: “This funding is part of a multi-step strategy to strengthen MariaDB across Europe, America and Asia, and will help foster the next phase of growth for the company.”

The round took the company’s overall funding to approximately $66m and follows a $9m round in January 2016 that included Intel’s corporate venturing unit, Intel Capital, and venture capital firm California Technology Ventures.

Both investors were among MariaDB’s earlier backers, along with Runa Capital, Finnish Industry Investment, Open Ocean Capital and Spintop Private Partners.
