Microsoft identifies Trusona as investment target

US-based identity authentication platform developer Trusona secured $10m yesterday in a series B round led by Microsoft Ventures, the corporate venturing division of software provider Microsoft.

Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB), the venture capital firm that led Trusona’s $8m series A round in February 2016, also participated.

Founded in 2015, Trusona has created an online authentication system that aims to remove the security risk associated with passwords, instead using email verification and photo ID-scanning technology to allow different levels of access depending on the security requirements.

The company’s technology is utilised across the government, media, healthcare, finance and education sectors. It will use the funding to speed up growth plans and begin moving into international markets.

Nagraj Kashyap, corporate vice-president at Microsoft Ventures, said: “Identity management is a critically important and growing space.

“Helping businesses and consumers move toward a safer and more secure digital world is a priority for Microsoft. We believe in the work Trusona is doing to give their enterprise clients peace of mind when it comes to data protection.”
