Motorola pilots CyPhy investment

Motorola Solutions Venture Capital, the investment arm of data communications and telecommunications equipment provider Motorola Solutions, invested an undisclosed amount in US-based drone manufacturer CyPhy Works on Monday.

Founded in 2008, CyPhy had previously raised a total of approximately $10m, according to regulatory filings. Its other investors include Lux Capital, Felicis Ventures, General Catalyst Partners and undisclosed angel investors.

CyPhy’s unmanned aerial vehicles are capable of long-duration, persistent flights on autopilot without the need for recharging batteries. They can securely stream high-definition video and high-speed data, and are equipped with infrared imaging and laser measurement sensors.

The technology enables public safety agencies and commercial clients to easily collect information about remote locations.

Paul Steinberg, chief technology officer at Motorola Solutions, said: “A tethered drone collecting situational awareness in large or hard-to-reach locations quickly puts eyes and ears on the scene, enabling our customers to read the moment, know what is relevant and help them make fast decisions about how to deploy resources.

“This can help not only resolve incidents faster but also provide information to help prevent critical situations from happening in the first place.”
