Ouya, a US-based TV game console maker OUYA, whose backers include graphics-processor manufacturer Nvidia, has established its “Free The Games Fund”, a $1m fund to back game developers.
Game developers are required to launch a funding campaign on crowdsourcing platform Kickstarter, anytime between August 9 2013 and August 10 2014, and Ouya will match funding raised between $50,000 and $250,000, subject to certain conditions and until the fund is depleted.
Ouya itself originally raised $8.6m via Kickstarter. It then raised $15m in its series A round from a consortium including Nvidia, which makes the chips inside the Ouya’s devices; venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, which originally backed games developer Electronic Arts, led the A round, which also included VC peers Mayfield Fund, Shasta Ventures and Occam Partners.
Ouya was founded in 2012.
