Owl records $18m series A

US-based in-car security camera developer Owl has emerged from stealth with $18m from a series A round featuring insurance group CSAA.

Venture capital funds Maniv Mobility and Defy.vc also participated in the round along with VC firms Khosla Ventures, Menlo Ventures, Sherpa Capital and Moment Ventures.

Owl has created a dual-facing camera system that records everything happening in front of and within a user’s car, from traffic stops, crashes and dents to break-ins.

The system, which is powered by a vehicle’s onboard diagnostics port, connects to an app that allows users to receive security alerts and access high definition footage quickly on demand. It will go on sale later this year at the price of $299.

Andy Hodge, founder and chief executive of Owl, said: “Cars need video security – badly. No matter how you look at it, whether in terms of dollars or physical damage or emotional harm caused, the car is a place where a lot happens.

“We built the Owl Car Cam to help people feel safer with a device that’s super easy to install and use everyday. And with the Owl Car Cam, you will catch all the amazing, fun life moments that happen in your car too.”
