US-based data services provider Portworx raised $20m in series B funding on Wednesday from investors including GE Ventures, the corporate venturing vehicle for industrial conglomerate General Electric.
The round was led by Sapphire Ventures, the venture capital firm spun out of software developer SAP, and also featured Mayfield Fund and additional, unnamed existing backers.
Portworx has developed container data management technology that has applications in a range of sectors. GE, for example, relies on the platform for its industrial internet-of-things product Predix.
The company will use the cash to boost sales and to add new features such as encryption and multi-cloud data management as well as deeper integration with third-party products.
Abhishek Shukla, director of GE Ventures, and Jai Das, managing director of Sapphire Ventures, are joining Portworx’s board of directors.
Portworx has now raised $28.5m in funding to date. Mayfield and Michael Dell, founder of IT company Dell, provided $8.5m in series A funding for the company in 2015.
