Science Exchange swaps series B shares for $25m

US-based scientific research marketplace Science Exchange secured $25m in a series B round yesterday featuring O’Reilly Alpha Tech Ventures (OATV), the corporate venturing unit of publisher O’Reilly Media.

The round was led by Maverick Capital Ventures and featured incubator Y Combinator’s Continuity Fund, Union Square Ventures, Index Ventures, Windham Venture Partners, Collaborative Fund, Fenwick & West, Silicon Valley Bank and assorted angel investors.

Founded in 2011, Science Exchange operates a marketplace for scientific research outsourcing services, providing access to screened and verified contract research organisations, academic laboratories and government facilities.

The fresh funding will drive recruitment across Science Exchange’s product, engineering, sales and marketing and customer support teams. David Singer, managing partner at Maverick, will join the company’s board of directors.

Science Exchange previously raised $3m in a 2013 series A round featuring OATV. The round was led by Union Square Ventures and also included several angel investors.

Andreessen Horowitz led a $1.5m seed round for the company in 2011 that featured Crosslink Capital, Morado Venture Partners, Lerer Ventures, Webb Investment Network, Start Fund, SV Angel, XG Ventures and assorted private investors.
