SK Telecom dials up uCirrus

UCirrus, a US-based technology to help social media games developers, has raised $4m in a round led by SK Telecom Ventures, the corporate venturing division of South Korea’s national phone operator.

Qualcomm Ventures, the corporate venturing division of phone company Qualcomm, and venture capital firm ATA Ventures participated in the round.

In June, uCirrus raised $1.7m of an expected $4.4m equity round, according to a filing with the US regulator, the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The software company recently launched a platform for MySpace game developers that brings push technology – a way to more efficiently deliver updated information and functionality – to Flash games.

Rob Trice, senior managing director of SK Telecom Ventures, Jack Young, senior investment manager at Qualcomm Ventures, and Mike Hodges of ATA are board members of uCirrus, which was formerly known as Groovy Corporation.

Trice said: "The richness of applications across clouds and mobile devices is driving an explosion in the amount of data moving across networks and into storage; and businesses and consumers are demanding more immediate access to more relevant content.

"UCirrus’ software powers real-time datastream processing and delivery of customized data, reducing infrastructure costs and improving throughput and response times."
