Syngenta, Mitsui join Marrone fertiliser deal

Seeds supplier Syngenta and Japan-based financial services group Mitsui’s corporate venturing units have joined a consortium investing $25.4m in the series C round for Marrone Bio Innovations, a US-based pesticide maker.

The financing is being used to help sell Marrone’s Regalia Biofungicide and launch.

Zequanox, a product for controlling invasive zebra and quagga mussels in fresh waterways, which are regarded as pests.

In March, Syngenta Crop Protection said it would exclusively distribute Regalia in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

John Atkin, chief operating officer of Syngenta, said: "The partnership with Marrone demonstrates how we can expand the options we offer to growers to help them manage the increasing complexity of protecting their crops.

"This innovative, new bio-fungicide will complement our integrated crop management program, and the depth of our grower network makes Syngenta an attractive distribution partner."

Marrone had previously raised $14.75m in its A and B rounds.
