US-based, sport-focused digital media company Whistle Sports has closed a series C round backed by several media companies that was sized at $20m, according to Variety.
The capital was provided by NBC Sports Ventures, a corporate venturing subsidiary of broadcaster NBC; Tegna, the media group formerly known as Gannett; UK-based broadcaster Sky and Emil Capital, a US-based subsidiary of Germany-headquartered retailer Tengelmann.
Whistle operates a digital media offering that sources and curates social media content from around 400 sporting stars, presenting it on social, digital and televisual platforms.
Part of the company’s activities involves integrating commercial content and advertising, while it also provides data insight into the 170 million aggregate subscribers, fans and followers of the platform.
Founded in early 2014, Whistle pulled in $10m from undisclosed backers in May the same year before closing a $28m series B round featuring Sky, Emil and media company Liberty Global in January 2015.
