Wilbur Ellis picks out FarmWise for series A

FarmWise, a US-based developer of autonomous robotics for the farming industry, has secured $14.5m in a series A round featuring agribusiness Wilbur Ellis.

Venture capital firm Calibrate Ventures led the round, which also featured Xplorer Capital, Alumni Ventures Group and undisclosed existing backers. Jason Schoettler, Calibrate Ventures’ co-founder, is joining the board of directors at FarmWise.

Founded in 2016, FarmWise provides artificial intelligence-equipped robots that can autonomously pick weeds from fields. It will spend the money on research and development and expanding headcount in its engineering and operation teams.

The series A followed $5.7m in a December 2017 seed round led by Playground Global and backed by Felicis Ventures, Basis Set Ventures and Valley Oak Investments.
