Wypler joins QBE Ventures

Daniel Wypler, former investment director at Australia-based bank ANZ’s corporate venturing vehicle, has been hired by local insurer QBE as managing partner of its QBE Ventures unit.

Having joined ANZi Ventures (ANZi) in May 2018, Wypler made 17 investments, adding nine companies to its portfolio and deploying more than A$125m ($87m).

Wypler’s earlier roles had included an investment associate position at fund manager AMP’s New Ventures unit before it was closed.

As global head of investments at QBE Ventures, Wypler said on his LinkedIn page he would invest in “early-stage technology companies [which] we believe have the potential to reshape the insurance industry”.

QBE Ventures was formed three years ago but has been restructured under unit CEO, James Orchard, who joined in July this year after a stint as executive general manager for innovation at insurance company IAG.

Orchard said by email: “We want to build a world class corporate venturing capability, and Daniel’s appointment reflects our ambition. I’m honoured that he chose QBE Ventures, and we are very excited to have someone of his talents leading the investment team.”
