Match.com, one of the worldwide dating websites operated by US-based internet company IAC, acquired a 20% stake in China-based matchmaking website Zhenai yesterday for an undisclosed amount.
Zhenai is only the most recent dating website Match has invested in with the aid of IAC. Match acquired US-based Singlesnet in February 2010, followed by its global competitor OK Cupid a year later. IAC also owns properties including Vimeo, College Humor and Newsweek/Daily Beast.
Launched in 2005, Zhenai has a user base of more than 30 million registered members across China and, in addition to the normal options available on dating websites, offers a call centre-based matchmaking service which offers advice and consultation to members.
Greg Blatt, chief executive officer (CEO) of IAC, said: "Given the rapid growth in China’s online personals market, we felt Zhenai was the best opportunity for Match.com to further expand our global footprint by partnering with a local market leader. With a strong management team led by founder, chairman, and CEO Dr. Song Li, we believe that Zhenai will continue to flourish as the Chinese online personals market expands."
