Intel Capital, the corporate venturing arm of semiconductor technology producer Intel, invested $355m in 2014, making 123 investments across 27 countries.
According to Intel Capital, 22 of its portfolio companies were acquired over the course of the year, and three, including video monitoring technology producer NetPosa Technologies and heart transplant surveillance company CareDX, went public.
Intel’s biggest investment in 2014 was the $740m it supplied to big data company Cloudera in March, for which it won Large Investment of the Year at the Global Corporate Venturing Symposium.
Some of the other prominent companies to receive funding from Intel Capital in 2014 include e-commerce company Snapdeal, cloud software technology developer Mirantis, power conversion technology provider Avogy and media distributor Hungama Digital Media.
In addition to its investments and exits, the unit also launched the $100m Intel Capital China Smart Device Innovation Fund in April. Formed in order to support smart device and internet of things companies in China, the fund invested a total of $28m in five companies in October.
Altogether, the unit’s activity over the course of 2014 brought its total investments to more than $11.4bn since it was founded, and it has now provided funding to more than 1,400 businesses since its formation.
