Puppet Labs adds $30m

Puppet Labs, a US-based automation software company Puppet Labs, said software provider VMware had invested $30m as part of a strategic partnership.

Ramin Sayar, vice-president of virtualization and cloud management at VMware, said: “This strategic investment and partnership will further accelerate the software-defined data centre, and will allow a more extensive automation and orchestration solution across infrastructure and application elements for VMware-based private and public clouds, physical infrastructures, OpenStack and Amazon Web Services.”

VMware previously acquired Nicira to help enable software management beyond the systems world, and Puppet Labs worked with data storage provider EMC to deliver Razor, a cloud provisioning-type service.

In December 2011, VMware, Google Ventures and computer networking corporation Cisco all contributed to Puppet’s $8.5m series C round.

Also participating in that C round were venture capital firms Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and True Ventures, and principal investment firm Radar Partners, the three previously making up Puppet Labs’ series B investors.

Puppet Labs’ series B round raised $5m, coming after a series A round supported by Radar, True and angel investor Glenn Winokur.
