Qualcomm Atheros, a semiconductor producing subsidiary of wireless telecommunications company Qualcomm, acquired US-based chipmaker Wilocity on Thursday for an undisclosed amount in a deal valued by online publication The Maker at $300m.
Qualcomm Atheros backed Wilocity’s $20m series C round in 2010, alongside Sequoia Capital, Benchmark Capital and Tallwood Venture Capital, and has worked closely with the company to create tri-band communications technology since 2011.
Wilocity’s $35m series D round in 2013 also featured Qualcomm Atheros, together with semiconductor manufacturer Marvell Technology. According to information provided by Israeli technology news source Globes, Wilocity had raised $82m in funding since it was formed.
Qualcomm’s acquisition of Wilocity will enable it to build further wireless services around Wilocity’s technology, which is currently found on Qualcomm devices, and which Qualcomm hopes will address growing consumer need for increasingly sophisticated smartphones and tablets.
Qualcomm Atheros was acquired by Qualcomm for $3.7bn in 2011.
