US-based food technology developer Sound Agriculture completed a $22m series C round yesterday featuring Cavallo Ventures and Syngenta Ventures, the corporate venturing subsidiaries of agribusinesses Wilbur-Ellis and Syngenta.
S2G Ventures led the round, which included fellow venture capital firm Cultivian Sandbox and farming and agriculture-focused private equity firm Fall Line Capital.
Founded in 2012 as Asilomar Bio, Sound Agriculture is developing molecular biotechnology that allows farmers to yield higher amounts of crops per harvest while still delivering nutritious food. The funding will go to developing bio-inspired plant traits and chemicals.
Sanjeev Krishnan, S2G’s managing director and chief investment officer, has joined Sound Agriculture’s board of directors along with Cheryl Martin, founder of consulting firm Harwich Partners. It had most recently secured $13.1m in December 2019 from undisclosed investors, according to a securities filing.
Syngenta Ventures led the company’s $12.3m series B round in 2017, investing alongside Cavallo Ventures, Cultivian Sandbox, Fall Line Capital and Mission Bay Capital. It came two years after $3m in series A funding from investors including Cultivian Sandbox and Fall Line Capital.
